5 New Significant Technologies

The rapid pace of technological innovation continues to have a profound impact on the world around us. The following five significant technologies all highlight specific ways in which new technology, improvements for older innovations and existing concepts that have been re-purposed or applied in new ways are making changes whose true impact may not be known for several years to come.

One: Reusable Rockets

The high-cost of launching craft, satellites and even astronauts into space has been a major obstacle since the advent of spaceflight. While NASA's space shuttle attempted to utilize a reusable orbiter in an effort to reduce cost, the latest generation of reusable rockets have the potential to significantly decrease the cost of future launches. More affordable satellite launches will allow businesses and service providers to expand the scope of their operations like never before.

Promises of More Life

Among the issues that arise concerning consumers wants in mobile devices, invariably, the topic of greater battery life comes up. Improved processor power is a popular item under discussion among chip companies, handset manufacturers, and wireless carriers who recognize the need for more battery life without compromising the consumer’s smartphone experience.

The question is where is the increased performance going to emanate from? Quad-core CPU’s are destined to become the standard for mobile devices. The development of the first eight-core is in the works at Samsung for it’s in its Galaxy S4. But delivery dates are hard to come by. Companies such as AMD, Intel, Nividia and Qualcomm anticipate that they will have to work harder at marketing the existing chips

A Game of Tug of War

The start-up project to bring Pop to the marketplace looked promising. Pop is a device that acts as a universal battery re-charger platform for mobile devices. The device was engineered to serve as a re-charging port for all devices regardless of its make or model. It generated significant support on Kickstarter, an online funding platform where aspiring inventors and creative types can interact with potential investors to find funding Pop’s initial goal was to raise about $70,000 in seed money. Yet, so well received was the project that it raised more than $140,000, more than double its goal. Kickstarter has successfully risen more than $350 million dollars in funding 30,000 projects since its inception in April of 2009.

The developers for Pop had to go through the ringer with Kickstarter, spending great deal of effort in making its case on the financing platform. It required weeks building their project pages, shooting videos and offering the right incentives to investors. Once the groundwork is laid, the project is introduced to the Kickstarter community.

Recharge With A Rock

Who would ever imagine that the venerable rocking chair one day would be re-purposed to accommodate the energy needs of our mobile devices? Rocking chairs, the iconic front porch furniture associated with another era, have been re-designed by Apple to find new found functionality in the modern world. Apple designed a rocking chair equipped to deliver high quality stereo sound to the person sitting in the chair. The soothing back and forth rocking motion in turn creates energy which can be used to re-charge all of your mobile devices.

The traditional looking furniture comes with an iPad docking station attached to one of the arms and speakers located on either side of the upper back rest. A small set of gears and an electrical generator work to convert movement into enough energy to partially re-charge an iPad or other Apple device. One hour of rocking can generate enough energy to re-coupe 35% of the devices total capacity. The chair is efficient enough to run the sound system off the grid.

Where's the Electric Car?

The entire world has been bound to gasoline almost since the inception of the first successful gasoline car built in 1893 by Charles Edgar Duryea and his brother Frank. While we can’t say for sure where exactly we went wrong, our reliance on foreign oil has led to a crisis that we face at the gas pump today. With gasoline prices biting at nearly $5 per gallon, it’s clear that while prices may go up and down, it could be less than 2 years before we see $6 per gallon in the United States alone.

While it seems like an electric car is far off in the future, the fact is that they’re somewhat readily available to us now. Hybrid technology allows cars to run off of electricity that is generated once the car is in motion. When the car comes to a complete stop, the engine completely shuts off while electric components continue running. This essentially increases your mileage for more than double what it is for regular gas cars today. Each year, new hybrid cars are released that offer a higher MPG than the year before, and our reliance on oil can slowly drop.
