The Leapfrog Era - Mobile Devices

In the Jurassic Park-era of mobile device evolution, technology transforms faster than a cell-splitting amoeba. As we've witnessed the communications technology re-shape our world and dramatically alter our lives, it makes sense to review its history and anticipate its future. Back in 1984, our communication technology leap-leapfrogged with an amazing breakthrough. That year saw the birth of the mobile phone.

Weighing in at a hefty 2 pounds, the precursor to today's smart phone had a battery life of thirty minutes and a $4,000 price tag. The only folks who could afford the device consisted primarily of drug dealers and time share salesman. Those among us with thinner wallets were happy to possess more affordable beepers at a time when phone booths were ubiquitous. The next evolutionary cycle saw the mobile phone continue to downsize to a point that permitted us to carry it in sheaths strapped to our belts. By 1997 the bulky antennas disappeared like prehensile tails. By 1999 the cell phones became compact enough to fit into our shirt pockets. The black and gray surfaced phones were replaced by vibrant colors and jazzy marketing campaigns.

Smartphones With "Smart Plans"

Are voice plans going the way of the dinosaur? Increasingly, free services are offering consumers an alternative to the traditional voice and text carriers. That’s great news for smart phone owners who are getting weary of paying high prices and being locked into multi-year contracts for a service that may prove to be redundant. As the quality of voice-over-IP (v-o-IP) continues to improve, many are toying with the idea of getting rid of their mobile phone carriers altogether. This is occurring as the traditional carriers find themselves in an increasingly competitive environment and new technology is making it easier to circumvent their services all together.

Interestingly, the very existence of the carriers was predicated on our need for the ability to communicate voice and text messaging on our cell phones. Now, new technology is killing the goose that initially laid the golden egg of mobile voice communications. Tech companies like Facebook and Skype are offering alternative delivery services that may eventually make companies like Verizon and T Mobile an extinct species. V-o-IP offers a significantly lower cost and reduced maintenance platform and accomplishes the same task.

Making comparisons between the performance of the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy 3 is like selecting your attire. The real question to consider is what purchase makes you feel more comfortable and look better and what best fits your lifestyle?

If history is an indicator, the selection process will essentially be determined by a single benchmark: are you an Apple fan or an android fan? In terms of pure functionality, what differentiates one product from the other largely deprives either from having a decisive edge over the other. So, it’s not likely that a diehard android fan will switch to an Apple product and aficionados of iPhones are not likely to opt for an android.

iPhone Dominates AT&T...Verizon, Not So Much

As much as the iPhone is highly available on Sprint and Verizon wireless, these two companies have a lot of their iPhone subscribers; however, ATT still takes the lion’s share when it comes to iPhone subscriber users on their network.

Numerous surveys done by a number of consumers still prove that iPhones still account for a higher percentage of more than half of all phones being used by ATT. The deal is, ATT has a large lion share of iPhone users because they consistently promote upgrades amongst their existing customers who use iPhones whose two-year contracts are just about to end.
