As Twitter's cultural and technical evolution continues, the dichotomy between its humble origins and it's current role as a powerful marketing vehicle is becoming evident. It's doubtful that even it's founder, Jack Dorsey, imagined the tremendous market penetration that Twitter now enjoys back in March 2006 during a brain storming session. Today, Twitter enjoys the prestige of being one of the 10 most popular web sites in the entire universe. As a result of its unprecedented  success, Marketers are attracted to Twitter like bees to pollen. Live tweets are a marketing device that takes advantage of real time marketing opportunities as the unfold. While this technique can be extremely effective in taking advantage of current trends, one must use caution in not  overplaying your hand. Proper placement of information and a receptive response from tweeters require  guidelines to go by in order to take advantage of Twitter from a product placement or cultural perspective. Here are some tips to follow for a successful Twitter campaign.

  • When tying into a current event, make sure you select a venue that fits your target audience and objectives. Events should appeal to the group you are targeting. That may entail a natural disaster, a musical venue or a sporting event. Events that generate a lot of interest, but preclude an opportunity for personal involvement, such as a sold out concert are good choices for tweeting opportunities.
  • To tweet often or keep it to a minimum, that is the question. It is necessary to tweet as often as necessary, but if its overdone you'll lose the interest of your group. If you think your campaign will require a lot of tweets, think about setting up a separate group for the tweet activity.
  • Employ good Twitter practices for the your tweets. Respond to replies and be proactive in providing requested information.
  • Post lots of photos and quotes from others.
  • Finally, don't get too carried away on hash tags. While they play a viable role, "#" can be annoying if #over-done.

Twitter's Typeahead auto-complete typing app is gaining fans as the tool catches on among those of us who require a writing assistant. The app is a open source and can be accessed on GitHub and MIT License. Twitter's strategy to grow the app is by opening up the entire community to the very web developers who will incorporating the app into their web development projects. Community input is welcomed and necessary to move Typeahead forward in development.

Typeahead is the inspiration derived from twitter.com's auto complete search functionality. Encompassing a complete auto-library, the app makes suggestions on how to complete a sentence. The app functions with both hard coded and remote data. Suggestions are culled from a myriad number of data sets. It supports a customized set of templates that generates the typing suggestions. The app is fully compatible with RTL languages and input method editors.

Twitter App Joins Windows Design

After months of delay, Twitter has announced the release of its updated app for Windows Phone. The app now provides full support for Live Tiles, a feature that is exclusive to Windows Phone. Moving forward, Window's Phone fans will be able to access their preferred Twitter account and pin it specifically to the phone's home screen. This enables users to access tweets from the phone's home screen without activating the account directly. This provides quick access to the Twitter account should you choose to delve deeper. The Tweet and Search icons grace each of the apps pages making a specific search easy to accomplish. Tweets can now be sent out from anywhere.

In addition, features will include Share charms, Snap views, Live tiles and Notifications that is native to the app's platform. The Share charm on Windows 8 permits the sharing of photos. Links and other apps as well as Internet Explorer 10 sync directly to Twitter. The twitter app provides a “Snap” view that displays a single column of tweets when its docked. That means multitasking users will be able to participate in Twitter conversations, watch streaming video and read the news simultaneously. The Snap view gives users the option of adjusting screen size to 1/3, 2/3's or full screen format.
