Promote Your Facebook Friends

Promote Your Facebook Friends
Facebook Paid Ads
Last October, Facebook unveiled a new and controversial feature that gives fans an opportunity to self-promote their posts by shelling out a few bucks for the privilege. Now Facebook is providing the same opportunity to promote your friends' posts for the same price. While hyping your own posts appears to be a little narcissistic, Facebook is now making the same $7 offer achieve higher visibility in your friends' feeds. The promote-a-friend's post option does have some practical and even humanitarian aspects to it. For example, a friend posts about an upcoming event such as a charity marathon. A Facebook friend can assist in promoting the worthwhile event by paying the $7 to have the event posted  all of his friends through the news feeds. Another likely scenario may involve  an apartment rental that becomes available through one of your Facebook friends. For $7, you have the opportunity to share the rental availability in other feeds so that more people are exposed to the greater visibility in other news feeds. This social networking business model holds some enticing possibilities for other media entities such as other classifieds that have been decimated by Craigslist over the years. Empty classified pages littering the newspaper industry has been the death knell of newspapers as they depended on classifieds for the lion's share of their profits. The erosion of that revenue stream has forever altered the publishing landscape making newspaper publication untenable...

How Google Search Works

How Google Search Works
Google Results
Google Search
For most of us, Google represents the most ubiquitous and least understood internet influence in our lives. While Google touches us in so many ways, we are clueless as to the mechanics of its operation. Google is trying to change that with the introduction of a new web site that gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse to the workings of the iconic search engine. The site, http://www.google.com/insidesearch/howsearchworks/thestory/ , offers an info-graphic that charts the path a search query follows as it travels through Google's labyrinth of checks and balances. Google's Product Manager Jake Hubert describes the site as where ”...you can follow the entire life of a search query, from web, to crawling and indexing, to algorithmic ranking and serving, to fighting web spam.” All of this occurs in the blink of an eye, belying the complexity of the task in the public's perception. The new Google site serves to change that perception with a detailed, easy-to-understand description of the process in which a search query ends up on the results page and into your browser. In addition, the site will act as a clearing house for other resources such as a Google blog, research papers, help center and user forums. “We hope the site helps to illuminate the split-second journey from algorithms to answers.” Hubert added. The animated presentation of search gives insight to important issues such as how Google removes spam and how it wages war against it. The Google site incorporates a live sideshow ...

Tools That Help - Collapsible Headers

Tools That Help - Collapsible Headers
Web Tools
Web developers are popularizing the use of collapsing headers in their web design. Collapsible headers   permit visitors to select a page link from the header which opens up to a sub-category of topics. The design capability is a solution to a number of constraints found in traditional headers. Primarily, the collapsible  headers are used to create  a more user-friendly method of directing visitors to the exact information for which they are they are searching.  Visitors have little patience in sifting through pages of content to locate the information that brought them to the site to begin with. Collapsible headers provide a clean, understandable snapshot that direct people to the information they wish to access quickly. The single biggest reason people leave a site quickly is because the information they are looking for are not easily found. Collapsible header helps resolve this by allowing the information to be easily crossed referenced and pin pointed without hassle . Mashable is a great case study in the use of collapsible headers. As its product is information, the site is challenged to offer a myriad amount of content in a user-friendly format. Mashable's header directs visitors to news categories such as “Social media”, "Tech” and “Business” and a number of categories with each link opening to sub-categories. It's fast, clean and the navigational flow is fluid. The header design also serves as user-friendly site map where visitors can learn wh...
