What Google Analytics Actually Tells You

Businesses of all sizes have various options for tracking website activity, with both paid and free tools available for instant sign-up. If your business operates on a budget and needs a comprehensive tool for website insights, you’re likely familiar with Google Analytics. However, if you’re just starting to explore your options, it’s important to understand what makes Google Analytics so valuable. Here are some of its top features that webmasters worldwide find most appealing.

Real-Time Tracking with Google Analytics

Google Analytics’ real-time tracking has become one of our favorite features. It lets you monitor visitor activity as it happens, including traffic from referring sites, social media platforms, and even keyword searches. While individual visitor tracking isn’t available unless sources are narrowed down significantly, the overall traffic data helps you measure the immediate impact of email campaigns social media posts, and paid campaign launches. With delays of only a second or two, it’s definitely worth exploring once you’ve signed up.

Custom Tracking URLs with Google Analytics

Google makes it easy to create custom names for your campaigns, mediums, sources, and ad groups. While this feature works best with paid campaigns, other tools like email marketing software can automatically tag your URLs with Google Analytics tracking codes, saving you time and effort. This enables you to dive deeper into your online marketing performance, helping you identify what’s working and what needs improvement.

Conversion Tracking with Google Analytics

By adding a simple code snippet to your checkout completion page, you can track conversions and their value down to individual transactions. You can also compare this data with your business software to see a direct correlation between online sales and purchases. Conversion tracking helps you understand key metrics like average order value, conversion rates, and best-selling products. Until you implement and explore Google Analytics, it’s hard to grasp the true power of this free tool. In this case, the saying “you get what you pay for” doesn’t apply—Google Analytics offers functionality and capabilities that rival even the top analytics platforms in the industry.

Google Analytics 4: What Changed, and Why Your Old Reports May Be Empty

If your website was set up more than a few years ago, the Analytics account attached to it was almost certainly built on Universal Analytics. Google retired that platform in 2023 and replaced it with Google Analytics 4, which measures visits as a stream of events rather than as sessions and pageviews. The change was not optional and it was not backward compatible.

The practical result is that a number of businesses are logged into a dashboard that stopped collecting new data, or into a GA4 property that somebody created in a hurry and never finished configuring. The traffic charts still draw, so nothing looks obviously broken, but the conversion tracking that would tell you whether the website is producing business was never carried over.

Worth checking today: open your Analytics account and look at the property name. If it ends in "UA-" or you cannot find a "Conversions" or "Key events" section with your contact form listed in it, your reporting is not measuring what you think it is measuring.

How We Set Up Google Analytics

  1. 1

Define what counts as a win

Form submissions, phone taps, quote requests, checkout completions. We agree on this before touching the account, because it determines everything that follows.

  2. 2

    Clean install of the tracking

One tracking implementation, not three. Duplicate tags are the single most common reason a site's numbers look impossibly good.

  3. 3

    Filter the noise

Your own office traffic, staff logins and known bot activity excluded, so the report reflects customers rather than your team.

  4. 4

    Test every conversion

We submit your forms ourselves and confirm the events register before we hand the account over. A goal that was never tested is a goal that usually does not work.

Connecting Analytics to the Rest of Your Marketing

Analytics is most useful when it is not working alone. Linking it to Google Search Console lets you see the search queries that brought people in alongside what those people did after arriving, which is the closest you will get to a single view of whether your SEO is producing revenue rather than just traffic. If you run Google Ads, linking that account attributes spend to outcomes instead of clicks. And if you have a Google Business Profile, tagged links from your listing let you separate local discovery traffic from everything else.

We set these connections up as part of a standard engagement, because a tool that only reports on itself will never tell you which channel deserves more of your budget.

Google Analytics: Common Questions

Is Google Analytics free?

The standard version is free and covers the needs of the overwhelming majority of business websites. Google sells an enterprise tier for organizations with very high traffic volumes or advanced data requirements, but if you are asking this question you almost certainly do not need it.

Why do Google Analytics and Google Search Console show different numbers?

Because they count different events. Search Console counts clicks recorded in Google's search results. Analytics counts visits recorded by a tracking script on your page. A person who clicks and then leaves before the page loads is a click in one tool and nothing in the other. Ad blockers, redirects and privacy settings widen the gap further. A discrepancy is normal; a total mismatch is worth investigating.

Can Google Analytics track phone calls from my website?

It can track when someone taps a phone number link on a mobile device, which is a reasonable proxy for call intent and is something we configure as standard. It cannot tell you what happened on the call or whether it was answered. If calls are your primary lead source and you need that detail, a dedicated call tracking service is the right tool, and we can advise on fitting one alongside your Analytics setup.

Will Google Analytics slow down my website?

Loaded correctly, the impact is small enough that most visitors will never notice it. Loaded badly — multiple copies of the script, or a tag manager stuffed with tools nobody uses anymore — it can measurably delay your page. Site speed is part of what we look at during a setup review.

How far back will I be able to see data?

Only from the moment tracking is correctly installed. Analytics cannot reconstruct history for a period it was not recording, which is the practical argument for setting it up sooner rather than waiting until you have a question you need answered. If an older property exists with historical data, we preserve access to it rather than deleting it.

What a Google Analytics Setup Costs

Pricing depends on how much already exists and how much of it works. Installing tracking on a site with nothing on it is straightforward; untangling a site running three tracking codes and a half-migrated property takes longer. We quote per project once we have looked at what you have.

  • Setup and configuration — one time. Install, internal traffic filters, conversion tracking, Search Console link, tested before handover.
  • Audit of an existing account — one time. We tell you what is wrong with what you already have and what it would take to fix.
  • Monthly reporting — monthly. A report that explains what changed rather than a dashboard you have to interpret yourself.

Quotes are free. Accounts are created under your ownership, and if our engagement ends the data and the accounts stay with you.
