Development: Frequently Asked Questions
Do we need custom development, or will a plugin do?
Very often a plugin will do, and we will tell you when that is the case even though it is the smaller job. Custom code earns its place when nothing existing fits, when the plugins that almost fit would need more configuration than code, or when you are stacking five plugins to achieve one outcome.
Which language will you use?
Usually whichever your existing systems are written in. All the mainstream options are fast and mature enough, and adding a second language to an organisation is a permanent maintenance cost. We only recommend switching when the new work is genuinely a poor fit for what you already run.
Can you work with our existing code?
Yes, and a good share of our work is exactly that. We audit what is there, document it, and extend it. If the foundation is sound that is nearly always cheaper than rebuilding — and if it is not, we will say so plainly rather than quietly quoting for a rewrite.
How do you price development work?
Fixed price against a written scope, wherever the work can be scoped. Open-ended discovery or research is billed by time, and we tell you which one you are getting before you commit. There is no hourly meter running quietly in the background.
How long will it take?
A single feature is usually a week or two. A web application with accounts, payments and several user roles runs to months. We scope in stages so you see working software early rather than waiting for one big reveal at the end.
Who owns the code when it is finished?
You do. The repository, the code and the documentation are yours from day one, and we hand over access at launch whether or not you continue with us.
Do you support it after launch?
Yes. Dependencies age, browsers change, and what the business needs moves. We offer ongoing support, and everything is documented so another developer could take over if you would rather they did.
