Google Ads Customer Match lets you use your own customer data, such as email addresses, phone numbers and mailing addresses, to show ads to the people who already know your business. Instead of targeting strangers by interest or keyword alone, you upload a list of past buyers, leads or newsletter subscribers, Google matches it against signed-in users, and your campaigns can reach those people across Search, Shopping, Gmail, YouTube and Display. In the video below, we walk through where to find Customer Match, how to format the file and how to upload it.
Why Customer Match is worth setting up
Most small businesses are sitting on first-party data they never use for advertising: years of invoices, form submissions and email signups. With third-party cookies fading and privacy rules tightening, that data is becoming one of the most valuable signals an advertiser has. Customer Match puts it to work in several ways:
- Re-engage past customers with offers for repeat purchases, renewals or upgrades.
- Exclude existing customers from acquisition campaigns, so you stop paying to “win” people you already have.
- Bid differently for high-value customers in Search campaigns, or tell Smart Bidding which audiences matter most.
- Feed audience signals to Performance Max and optimised targeting, which use your list as a starting point for finding similar people. (Google retired the old “similar segments” lookalike lists in 2023, so this is now the main way your list informs prospecting.)
Where to find Customer Match in Google Ads
Customer lists live in the Audience Manager, which you reach from Tools in the left-hand menu and then the Shared Library. Under your data segments, choose the option to add a new segment and select Customer list. Google will ask you to confirm that the data was collected in line with its policies and that your customers have consented, so make sure your privacy policy and signup forms support that before you upload anything. Not every account is eligible straight away; Google looks at an account’s history, including policy compliance and payment record, before Customer Match becomes available.
How to format your customer list
Most upload problems come from formatting. Google’s template is a simple CSV file with one customer per row and specific column headers, typically Email, Phone, First Name, Last Name, Country and Zip. A few rules make a big difference to your match rate:
- Include as many identifiers as you have. A row with email, phone and name plus country and ZIP code matches far more often than an email alone.
- Write phone numbers in international format with the country code, for example +13058125999.
- Use two-letter country codes (US) and remove extra spaces, symbols and duplicate rows.
- You can upload plain text, and Google hashes the data before matching, or you can hash it yourself with SHA-256 if your security policy requires it.
Uploading the list and using it in campaigns
Once the file is uploaded, give the list a clear name and choose a membership duration. Matching takes anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days, and a list needs a minimum number of matched members before Google will serve ads to it, so very small lists may never activate. When it is ready, add the list to your campaigns as an audience in either “observation” mode, to see how those customers behave and adjust bids, or “targeting” mode, to show ads only to them. Refresh the list regularly, or connect your CRM so it updates automatically, otherwise it slowly goes stale.
