Why Companies Are Quietly Rehiring Software Engineers

For eighteen months, the loudest story about software engineers was that they were obsolete. Generative AI would write the code. Copilots and coding agents would compress teams. Layoffs inlcuding Meta, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Klarna, Salesforce, Shopify, and dozens more. These layoffs were framed as structural, not cyclical. Junior engineers, in particular, were told they’d priced themselves out of an industry that no longer needed them.

The numbers are starting to tell a different story. Indeed’s software development posting index, tracked by Citadel Securities among others, bottomed in late 2024 and has been grinding higher ever since. It’s not a moonshot postings are still well below the 2022 peak but the direction has changed. And crucially, the composition has changed. The roles being added aren’t the same ones that got cut.
